KPCC’s Molly Peterson says a Mississippi paper broke news of the Hattiesburg native’s decision today.įloyd reportedly resigned by writing to USC’s athletic director that he could no longer give his full enthusiasm to the job. ``Hopefully, I’ll be given another chance.Veteran college basketball coach Tim Floyd has resigned from his position at the University of Southern California. ``I would like to continue to be a head coach,″ he said. Parker assumed he had time to rebuild a basketball program that has long struggled in the shadow of Southern Cal’s powerhouse football teams. He had the interim tag removed from his title last March. Prior to being promoted, Parker, 47, was USC’s associate coach for six years. The team went 7-21 and lost its final 14 games. Parker took over as interim coach after George Raveling retired suddenly two days before the start of last season following a near-fatal car accident. Garrett, Parker and Bibby, the new coach, are all black. The Black Coaches Association has initiated an inquiry into the dismissal, saying that Parker allegedly was fired without just cause or notice. ![]() ``He has his opinions and he has every right to them,″ Garrett said before Parker talked to reporters. Parker said he always listened to Garrett’s comments about who should and shouldn’t play, and then adjusted accordingly. He accused Garrett of ``a giant amount of interference″ in running the basketball program. ``My staff and I achieved in spite of the interference by an athletic director, who is totally inexperienced in the complex workings of Division I basketball,″ Parker said. Parker, who signed a four-year contract last spring, said he is considering legal action against the university, but said filing a lawsuit would make him ``extremely unhappy.″ I think we can be competitive, not necessarily more, but we will be competitive.″ ``There are things we need to continue to work on _ rebounding, defense. ``We’re not looking to turn the team around, we just want to continue improving,″ he said. He has 14 years of college and professional coaching experience, including stints in the CBA and USBL. 25 Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif.īibby, 46, joined the USC basketball program last May as an assistant, brought in at Parker’s recommendation. However, immediate speculation centered on former star USC guard Paul Westphal, who was fired as coach of the Phoenix Suns last month.īibby, a former UCLA basketball star, begins his stint tonight when the Trojans take on No. Garrett said Bibby will be the coach for the rest of the season and denied he has spoken to anyone else about being the permanent coach. ``I have been watching the team closely the entire season, and over the last two weeks is when I decided.″ ``It was not a decision made from wins and losses, but a decision that I had been mulling over the last couple of weeks,″ he said. Garrett said he felt a change was necessary because of the players’ lack of progress on and off the court. ``We were a little unhappy because we weren’t winning, but it wasn’t necessarily with the coaches,″ he said. Guard Cameron Murray said the team had no problems with Parker. They are sixth in the Pacific-10 Conference with a 4-5 record. The Trojans have an 11-10 record, but have lost nine of the last 14. ![]() ``I never received any criticism about my performance or the accomplishments of my staff and self in the way the season had progressed.″ ``I’ve never done anything to cause him to treat me in such an unprofessional manner,″ Parker said. Parker directed his anger toward Garrett, a former Southern Cal football star who won the Heisman Trophy in 1965.
